These skaters were their own silent partners on a wintery afternoon. It was taken from a helicopter by Pulitzer-prize winner photographer Vincent Laforet and published on the front page of The Times on Feb. 23, 2004. Laforet had been circling over Lasker Rink in Central Park, waiting for just the right moment. Some would wonder which side was up in this photograph, since it seems to work in either direction. But Laforet would say, "The shadows are on top. That's how I first saw the rink."
