The sculpture of Minerva atop Grand Central Terminal received something of a makeover, an arduous task done every so often to restore the building's facade, made of limestone but whose daily assault from pollution and other hazards of city life render it a "mossy brown."
In 2004, The Times reported on another round of cleaning and restoration, which included "repairing cracks, repointing all 23,457 stones on the facade and replacing missing pieces, all part of more than $21 million in final touches."
